Two books – Daughters of the Sun and Moon, by Lisa See, and Thousand Pieces of Gold, by Ruthanne Lum McCunn – tell stories of immigrant Chinese women in 19th century America. Lisa See’s book is fiction, while Thousand Pieces of Gold is based on true events. Both reveal the experiences of Chinese women as they struggled to survive in a country that was frequently hostile toward them.
